11 Tips for updating your home in 2011
Well, the new year is almost here - which has many thinking about resolutions. If one of yours is to improve your home - inside or out - here are 11 tips to inspire you!
1. Paint Your Front Door. Refresh the exterior of your home and increase curb appeal by repainting your front door. Try a bolder accent color to give your home a whole new feel!
2. Change Your Light Switches to Rocker-style Panels. If you have the old "toggle" style light switches, they tend to get dirty/grimey fast! Upgrade to cleaner rocker-style switches - they are fairly inexpensive and you only need basic construction skills and tools to change them out!
3. Add an Area Rug. Over tile, wood, or even other carpet, an area rug can bring a room's furniture together and give a "finishing" touch!
4. Powerwash Your Exterior. Rent a PowerWasher from Home Depot for the day and hit your home, walls, sidewalks and driveway. You'll be AMAZED what a difference it can make!
5. Switch Out Lightbulbs to Energy-Saving Versions. Go buy replacement bulbs now; wait until your existing ones burn out (so you don't waste them!) and replace them as they burn out. If you have them on hand, then you don't have an excuse not to use them!
6. Replace your Mattress. If it's 8 years or older, it's time for a new one. Your old one is full of dead skin cells which - after 8 years - can amount to 20 EXTRA POUNDS...gross! A new mattress will allow you to sleep better, too - and who doesn't want that...?!
7. DONATE. Donate anything you are not using - clothing, appliances, kitchenwares, etc - do it before 12/31 to write the items off on taxes! Clear out the clutter, and do good at the same time!
8. Buy Rubbermaid or Similar Storage Containers Now. They are all on sale this time of year - organize your garage and closets now!
9. Paint an Accent Wall in Your Home. Pick a wall in 1 room and select a bolder accent color. Paint, supplies will be under $50 and it only takes a weekend day to paint. It will have a HUGE impact!
10. Clean ALL Your Light Switches and Door Knobs! They gather germs all year and hardly any one remembers to clean them....
11. Prioritize Which Rooms You Want to Remodel. Decide what order you would like to update inside - renovate your master bath...? New furniture for your Living Room....? Tile for your Dining Room...? Figure out which is most important to you and set savings goals to make the updates by Halloween - in time for the Holidays next year!
